  • DNA President’s ‘Oscar’ Night Comments Sandwiched Between 28 Minutes Of Hype; No Substantive Issues Addressed Directly

    Billed as the “Oscar” night presentation because it coincided with the Academy Awards, a conference call hosted by Data Network Affiliates (DNA) lasted for a total of roughly 32:10.

    Almost all of the call — about 28 minutes — consisted of  hype.  (Looking it as a percentage, about 87.5 percent of the call was hype.) Roughly the first three minutes were consumed by people announcing their presence on the line, with the encouragement of a pitchman. The balance of the call largely consisted of hype from two DNA pitchmen, with discussion of issues such as privacy concerns spoken about only indirectly through a reference to Google.

    One of the pitchmen made the broad point that Google collects data. DNA says it collects the license-plate numbers of cars for entry in a database. The parallel between what Google does and what DNA does was not made clear in the call, and the pitchman appeared to be trying to make the point that data collection was just a part of life.

    The same pitchman — in a previous call — described the parking lots of giant retail stores, churches and doctors’ offices as sources of license-plate data. Those comments, coupled with claims by other DNA promoters that have ignored privacy and other concerns or pooh-poohed them — are among the things fueling critical commentary about the firm.

    When Kurek came on the “Oscar” call at roughly the 21:30 mark after more than 18 minutes of hype by the pitchmen, he spoke for about four minutes, covering his business experience that previously had been covered by both pitchmen.

    The balance of the call was more hype. No issues raised by critics on matters such as the propriety, safety and legality of DNA were addressed directly. Kurek did say he had experience with companies that maintained private data and that his business experience had taught him about “accountability” and “organization.”

    Kurek did not participate in the hype. He thanked members for listening in — and the thanked the pitchmen and DNA’s 63,000 affiliates.

    “My true talent is also finding the right people to get the job done,” Kurek said. “I truly believe we’ve assembled the best MLM minds in the world.”

    His vision, he said, was to provide services and benefits never before thought of. Kurek spoke with an even voice throughout his time on the line. He did not address comments made last week by Dean Blechman, DNA’s former CEO, that the company had a “back door guy” within its operation and that some communications put out by the company were “bizarre” and misleading.

    Because the lines were muted, no caller asked a question. Neither the pitchmen nor Kurek solicited listeners to ask questions during the call. After the call ended, several issues were left dangling, including whether Phil Piccolo somehow had become involved in DNA.

    Piccolo is a lightning rod for MLM critics.

    Blechman did not rule out last week that Piccolo was involved. When pressed for a definitive answer, Blechman suggested that one could be forthcoming.

    Piccolo is the subject of considerable scorn online. Whether he is part of the company remains unclear, and rumors of his involvement continue to swirl.

    In other DNA news, some affiliates of the company appear to be pulling their ads from craigslist. Other craigslist ads by DNA affiliates have been labeled “flagged for removal.” Still others have expired.

    Some craigslist ads remain. One of them — dated Feb. 26, two days after Blechman’s departure as CEO — is posted in Los Angeles. The ad claims that its contents came from a DNA “press release” dated Feb. 25.

    “A very high powered CEO with Public Company Experience is stepping up to the plate with exciting plans being put into place to make D.N.A. one of the most powerful Viral Affiliate Marketing Companies in the U.S.A. and around The World,” the ad reads.

    “The D.N.A. company is signing a MEGA MILLION DOLLAR DEAL with a publicly known industry giant. Between this agreement being sign and the D.N.A. Top Secret Product being announced on March 27th, 2010. D.N.A. is positioning itself to be Global Giant.”

    Blechman noted last week that the company did not announce his Feb. 24 departure until March 2. He questioned why the company had waited so long.

    At roughly the 3:26 mark of the call, one of the pitchmen said, “I mean, I gotta tell ya, if they were giving out some Oscar awards in multilevel marketing, or, you know, something special, I believe DNA would definitely get something tonight.”

    The Oscar awards, of course, are for proficiency in acting.

  • Warnings Appear On Craigslist In NarcThatCar Ads; Some Ads Targeted For Removal Day After FTC Announced Crackdown On Online Fraud

    UPDATED 9:47 A.M. ET (U.S.A.) Coincidence? Part of the new partnership the FTC announced yesterday with Craigslist that urges consumers to be on the lookout for scams when responding to job and business opportunity ads online?

    Messages urging caution are appearing in Craigslist ads for NarcThatCar, the Dallas-based company that says it is building a database for companies that repossess automobiles and is using a multilevel-marketing program to attract thousands of members.

    Warnings were observed at the top of NarcThatCar ads on Craigslist in several cities this morning. The warnings appear at the top of the pages of individual postings and are highlighted in yellow, with a red lead-in:

    “Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally!” the lead-in warns. A “More info” link appears after a general warning about money scams, and the link resolves to a page that includes information on how to contact the FTC.

    An Atlanta Craigslist ad for NarcThatCar with a headline of “Start Your Own Business! – $125 (Worldwide!)” includes the warning message. The ad calls NarcThatCar an ‘investment.”

    “Make over $5000.00 a month with a $125.00 investment! Go to jnelson.narcthatcar.com!” the ad reads.

    A NarcThatCar ad on Craigslist in Houston also includes the warning, which appears above a headline that reads, “Earn Extra Cash!… Collecting Data! (www.extracash4plates.narcthatcar.com).”

    Meanwhile, a Craigslist ad for NarcThatCar in Oklahoma City also includes the warning. Its headline is “Data Entry/Networking.”

    The warning also appears above a NarcThatCar ad in New York’s Craigslist, above a headline that reads “Make money by reporting license plate numbers” and a sales pitch that begins, “What would you do if you could get paid over $2 for every license plate number you write down?”

    What once was an ad for Narc That Car on Craigslist in Austin, Texas, does not include the warning. Rather, the ad includes this message, “This posting has been flagged for removal.”

    Elsewhere, a NarcThatCar Craigslist ad in Baton Rouge includes the warning, above a headline that reads, “The Simplist Homebase Marketing Job on the Planet! (Baton Rouge).”

    The body copy of the ad says (in part), “Learn how to turn information into income NARC (National Automobile Recovery Company) ThatCar.com

    “No Selling, No Products or Inventory

    “100% Return on Investment as fast as 24 to 48 hours.

    “Job Duty: Enter 10 random license plates per month to help create a National real time database that is used by: Police Department(criminal involvement), FBI(Amber Alert), Military(Terriorist), Banks, Car Rentals, Car Dealerships (RePo), and Major Business for marketing purposes.”

  • FTC Announces Major, Multiagency Sweep; Says Government Will Seize Assets Of Scammers; Heralds New Partnerships With Craigslist, Microsoft, Others To Combat Online Fraud

    The Federal Trade Commission has announced a major sweep involving numerous companies and defendants — and a new partnership with Craigslist, Microsoft, Monster.com and CareerBuilder to combat employment and work-at-home fraud.

    Meanwhile, the agency said it was working with AARP’s Legal Counsel for the Elderly to keep America’s senior citizens’ pocketbooks out of the clutches of scammers.

    Dubbed “Operation Bottom Dollar,” the sweep includes seven new civil cases against the operators of deceptive and illegal job and money-making scams, 43 criminal actions by the Department of Justice and 18 actions by state attorneys general.

    A separate action by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is part of the sweep, and the FTC announced updates in four previous cases. “Operation Bottom Dollar” specifically targets “con artists who are preying on unemployed Americans with job-placement and work-at-home scams,” the FTC said.

    “Employment and business opportunity fraud causes terrible hardship to those who are suffering the most in these difficult economic times,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney General Tony West. “The Justice Department is committed to prosecuting those who defraud through false promises of employment or financial success.”

    The days of getting away with posting bogus job and money-making offers online are coming to an end, said David C. Vladeck, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

    Using  terse language, Vladeck said scammers should not get too comfortable with the money they’ve stolen.

    “If you falsely advertise that you will connect people with jobs or with opportunities for them to make money working from home, we will shut you down,” Vladeck said. “We will give your assets to the people you scammed, and, when it’s appropriate, we’ll refer you to criminal authorities for prosecution.”

    Monster.com, Careerbuilder, Bing and Craigslist will display FTC consumer education material to people who are using the companies’ Web sites to look for jobs, the FTC announced.

  • Will Donald Trump Regret Linkage Of Name To MLM?

    EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was prompted by a post we saw on Scam.com. The “lede” is deliberately buried in this article in favor of some background information.

    During the 1990s, I was sitting at home one evening just minding my own business. Back in those days I routinely had staggered newspaper deadlines beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting perhaps through 9 p.m. I often covered an event for more than one publication. I was tasked with the duty to write unique stories for each publisher from the same fact set.

    If I’d spent the day covering a murder trial, for example, I could not submit duplicate stories to the publishers. They wanted individual stories tailored to their readership — stories that required me to present the information in the in-house styles of the publications. One of my key responsibilities was to write different “ledes” for the stories, an opening sentence or paragraph unique to the audiences and designed to grab readers’ attention and not let go.

    Getting it right the first time — which is to say, “grabbing” readers, including all the key facts and adopting the “voice” of the newspapers throughout the story — was my responsbility. Not doing it meant I’d spend the evening fielding calls from editors to fill in details, instead of enjoying the time with my girlfriend. She didn’t like it when editors called and perhaps disrupted the movie we were watching.

    I didn’t like it, either. So, I worked hard to ensure I’d lighten the work load on my editors, while lightening the load on myself and freeing up time to kick back.

    Editors, though, were not the only ones who called — and this brings us back to something that happened one night when I was just kicking back at home after finishing my work day.

    People occasionally would call me with news tips from the mundane to the incendiary and all places in between. On this particular evening I got a call on what I’d initially thought might be one of those “in between” things, but it was worth checking out immediately because the unemployed woman who called me was really worked up.

    I agreed to meet her in a hotel lobby to listen to her story. I soon discovered she wasn’t the only person worked up in the lobby of this hotel, which was situated in a county experiencing high joblessness and economic decay because manufacturing had gone into the tank locally.

    “What’s going on?” I asked.

    Some of the most forlorn-looking people you’d ever want to see quickly told me they’d been duped into attending a job “interview” by a prospective employer that had placed an ad and created the expectation it would hire workers for jobs that paid $30 an hour.

    Naturally the employer had no trouble filling the room in a town experiencing hardship.

    Before long, though, the event turned into a grimace-fest. Attendees thought the advertiser was recruiting them to work at a hospital after they received training in an emerging science that had something to do with making sure healthcare ecosystems were maintained.

    In reality, it was a pitch for an MLM of some sort that apparently specialized in sucking dust from the atmosphere of homes across America to keep the owners safe from microscopic allergens and pathogens that silently were killing them.

    Yes, the promoter had come to the struggling town to try to recruit a team of vacuum-cleaner salespeople. The sky was the limit.

    Except it wasn’t.

    The attendees told the promoter it wasn’t — in no uncertain terms. Later I covered a similar incident involving hearing aids at the same hotel. The key, from the promoters’ perspective, was to draw a crowd by using words to trigger emotions and plant a false idea, and then try to sell the desperate few who remained on the dream of MLM riches.

    Need and greed. Marry the two  — and return in your fancy car to your fashionable home in time to set sail in your fancy boat. When you need to replenish cash, take out another ad to sell a vacuum cleaner by calling it an ecology system. Replace the money you spent on cocktails and martinis and restocking the bar on your boat, and then head back to your fashionable home in your fancy car to set sail again on your fancy boat.

    And this brings us to Donald Trump, whom MLMers say has lent his name to a business opportunity.

    Someone posted about it on Scam.com, pointing out that MLM purveyors were pushing it on craigslist by referring to Trump as a “Billionaire, Real Estate Developer from NYC” who is “Opening a New Metabolic Testing Company” near Atlanta.

    Let’s hope the “Metabolic Testing Company” being pitched on craigslist in Atlanta by referencing Trump without mentioning his name is not the equivalent of the ecologically pleasing vacuum cleaner pitched to people who thought they were going to get an exciting, new career in the healthcare field in America’s Rust Belt.

    I’m not hopeful: The craigslist ad suggests compensation of “$30 to $50 per hour.”
